The underdog wins again!
March 1, 2011 0 By Noyon Jyoti ParasaraWhile the entire country was looking forward to the budget, there was also a level of excitement towards the Oscars which were being telecast live the same morning. Reason – AR Rahman was nominated in two categories. It ended being quite a disappointing day for his fans as the awards went to The Social Network and Toy Story 3 in Original Score and Original Song category respectively.
Nevertheless the awards proved one thing yet again – stories about underdogs do fantastically well. This time it was The King’s Speech, which is about King George VI and his stuttering problem. The story of the king’s journey to become a fine orator from being a stuttering recluse not only moved the audience but also critics alike. And after being a box office success The King’s Speech went on it wing four of the most anticipated Oscar awards – leaving behind extremely hyped films like Inception and The Social Network. Tom Hooper directed The King’s Speech won The Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.
A close second is Christopher Nolan’s Inception. This film too won four of the technical awards – Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects. David Fincher’s The Social Network won three out of the eight nominations that it received. While Inception and The Social Network have released and done very well in India, The King’s Speech is yet to release in the country.
